Finishing my apple this morning, I remembered what used to come next. If you were with a few of your friends, someone would yell “Apple core!” Somebody would respond with “Baltimore!” Next there’d be a question: “Who’s your friend?” At which point, one of us would name somebody else in the group, for example, “Mike!” Then the person holding the apple core would throw it at Mike. This was funny stuff. (Watch Donald Duck fall for this trick.)
Blossom by blossom the spring begins
Spring is upon us here in Utah, and most of us are going to start enjoying the moderate temperatures outside. Many will want to get their bikes out of the garage or storage and go view the wonderful nature around them. Some will go for a picnic. Others off to explore new local trails or bird watching.
Whatever your plans are, you likely haven’t given much thought to your fruit trees and that’s absoltuely a shame. Right now, your trees are flowering and preparing to bear some of the most delicious fruit. Think of that nice shiney apple… or is it that sweet taste of peach juice from a freshly picked peach? Whatever your fruit tree is, you must start thinking of what you’d like to see when it comes time to pick your fruit.
Would you rather view some mouth watering fruit that just calls your name…. or are you willing to give up most of your fruit, and quite possibly your tree to aphids, scales, mites and many other pesky bugs? Trust us, go with the first. You know, that mouth watering part. It’s the more delicious path. But how do you achieve this?

Right now you need to get started in saving your fruit! The month of March is a great time to start. Schedule an appointment right now and we can come out to your home, assess your fruit trees and advise you on your needs. In March (or even earlier during the winter months), we recommend putting dormant oils on your trees.
What is dormant oil and why is it important? Dormant oils are used to smother overwintering insects (such as aphids, scales and mites and their eggs). We apply dormant oils in late winter or early spring which are ideal, when temperatures are above freezing or when fruit trees are in their inactive period. For dormant oil to provide proper control, the oil must come in contact with the pests.
Ok, Now What?
So what about later on? By July you should have already been receiving regular bug spraying by us in order to keep your fruit trees healthy and protect your fruit. We also spray for aphids throughout Spring, Summer and Fall. These pesky things are highly mobile and tend to develop into infestations rather quickly.
Lastly but not leastly, you should check for fungus/blight on your trees. Tree blight can be very detrimental to the health of the tree, and if left unchecked, could result in a need for tree removal! If you do see fungus or blight on your trees we provide treatments to cure your tree. It’s also something we look for everytime we come to your home. We want you to have a wonderful harvest!
