When our gardens become beautiful with wonderful plants growing in them, they always seem to attract the worst kind of bugs. One of these bugs are grasshoppers. Typically they are just annoying to deal with, but this year it seems they are out in force!
Once grasshoppers group into the hundreds you call them locus. In a group this large grasshoppers can have a bigger devastating effect! These pests will lay eggs in late summer (right now in August!) Eggs are deposited in late summer in elongated masses or pods inserted in the soil. Meaning next year you are going to have the same issue. The grasshoppers you are seeing are pests that Big Tom’s Pest Control can remove this pest from your home and properties.
Let’s discuss what damage these grasshoppers actually do. Did you know that they prefer young green plants, especially lettuce, beans, corn, carrots, onions, and some annual flowers. Your tender young plants need to be protected from these feeders. Grasshoppers can be the most noticeable and damaging insects to yards and fields. They also are among those most difficult to control, since they are highly mobile. For many reasons, grasshopper populations fluctuate greatly from year to year, and may cause serious damage during periodic outbreaks. Problems tend to increase beginning in early summer and can persist until hard frosts.
Grasshoppers less commonly feed on leaves of trees and shrubs. However, during outbreak years even these may be damaged. Furthermore, grasshoppers may incidentally damage shelterbelt plantings when they rest on twigs and gnaw on bark, sometimes causing small branches to die back.
